1975 Winnebago Itasca RV Tour // First One Ever Built!

December 5, 2019

1975 was an influential year for both you and us! Think about it. The things that happened that year made it so we could be sitting down here together right now, me sharing and you reading and watching.

In 1975 Microsoft became a registered trademark and Bill Gates and Paul Allen developed a computer program and a microcomputer called Altair 8800. Now I’m not sure what the definition of microcomputer was but I think it basically meant the computer didn’t take up an entire room, leading to us both having one and looking at it to share this info as I write. Also, the digital camera was invented. So there you have it! These two technologies have come so far that even Kory and I can film video and take great pics of the places we go, and the RVs we love (without using film). Imagine if we had to use film, we’d be engulfed by all of the cut footage that we get rid of. We can edit without being professionals and even I can sit here and share it with you easily. Now the internet didn’t become public friendly until 1991 but it all started back in 1975.

The other thing that started was the first ever built Winnebago Itasca came out, and boy was she a beaut! The 70’s in general was a crazy time for colour and style and the Itasca shared in those ideas fully.

If you were anything like me, you would see a rig like this running down the road and just ache to get inside and take a look around. So when we came across the RV Museum in Amarillo, TX. I couldn’t believe my luck at what I had found and how I could use my digital camera and computer to share it with you.

The Winnebago Itasca slept 6, had a full kitchen and even more functional full bathroom. Big windows and a V8 engine would have had this Class A motorhome humming down the highway. I don’t know anyone who ever owned one but if you do let me know in a comment. I’d love to hear of their experiences in it.

We visited Amarillo and the Jack Seismore RV Museum in Oct 2018 to check out all of the cool vintage RVs there. If you want to see more vintage RVs click here or here and we’ll keep looking for them for you. Join us on this blog by signing up and on our Youtube channel by clicking SUBSCRIBE. It’s so cool to have you as our friend. Thanks for stopping by.

I am a RV lover. All things RV are intriguing to me right down to the little details. I love to travel, especially in the Beaver, and combining our adventures with our reviews really is having my cake and eating it too. We are rvSometimers, meaning that we do things just a little different then most RV vloggers but it just goes to show that anyone can fit into this lifestyle.

    1. A friend of mine used to represent DRV Mobile Suites but says they are crap now under Thor. Do you think the entire RV production is bad news except for the custom coaches that are built like Sherman tanks for $150,000 and up? I saw a Van Leigh horror story on YouTube after that Tiffin family company has been getting rave reviews all over hell’s half acre.

      1. Hey there, we have not done the research on DRV or Van Leigh yet but we sure would like to. Our personal opinion is that often when big companies buy up small ones and start making ‘efficiency changes’ they often cause some problems and then it takes awhile to iron those out. Some get there others may not. We think that RVs are not constructed like houses and none of us could afford to have them or take them anywhere if they were. It would be great if there were some standards that manufacturers had to follow, like the car industry, but we would all have to be willing to pay for the added cost of having those regulations so I guess the question is are we???

        1. Yes, we likely are not equipped to pay for a properly regulated RV industry. It seems like Grand Design is getting very many things right from the get go, but the structural foundation still suffers the same systemic weaknesses found on nearly all 5th Wheels except the DRVs, Luxes, New Horizons and Spacecraft etc.
          Thanks for being there

      1. Indeed it is. We love these old rigs that are essentially the same as today with a few less bells and whistles.

    1. Winnebago is such a great name and such a good product my next door neighbor had one back in the early 80s and it was great to take trips in it..

      1. Ya, they’ve been around for a long long time. I guess that says something. I know I would have been ecstatic about getting into one back then. Did you travel in your neighbour’s?
