Ahhhh! The Arizona desert. You just keep driving along and then there on the side of the road is the sign! We thought we were never gonna find it. The nav seemed confused, everything around us looked the same, but we made the turn and yep there actually was a state park there.
Kartchner Caverns State Park didn’t seem like much but that’s because all of the really spectacular stuff is under the ground! Really, you take this little trolley thing up to the big doors in the side of the mountain and once you are sealed in there you will see the most dramatic form of ancient geological formations. Wow, wow, wow was all we could say. Stalactites and stalagmites everywhere! You really have to see it to believe it.
We had a really great time here just parked in the overflow parking lot for $15. They also have some great hiking trails which we thought we may be able to bike hike on but NO you can’t. We try everything but the answer is No you can’t! But we had fun anyways.
We stayed here in March 2018.
We stayed in the overflow lot of Katchner Caverns State Park but they do have a nice campground with services if you plan further ahead then we do, and they also have a really nice sani-dump.
There are a few tours you can take through the Caverns, we took the Rotunda tour, but you can book your’s here.
Let us know if you go or if you’ve been before, we’d love to hear what you thought too.
